Cummins Captures Second Sprint Car Feature Victory at Bloomington Speedway, Sterrett a Winner for St. Jude’s

July 15, 2018, Bloomington, Indiana – Princeton, Indiana’s Kyle Cummins captured his second sprint car A-main of the season on Friday, as Jeff Wimmenauer scored his second RaceSaver win and Jason Hehman captured the super stock feature. In one of the most popular victories of the night, Bradley Sterrett won the Heroes & Hornets 25-lap celebrity race.

Cummins followed up his opening night Tom White & Company Real Estate non-wing sprint car division feature victory, with a dominating run from the pole, taking advantage of a car that worked best in the low groove. As many sprint car racers took advantage of the opportunity to run the Bloomington oval just days in advance of the opening of USAC’s Indiana Sprint Week, Robert Ballou edged Jeff Bland for second after staring from the third row. Isaac Chapple was impressive as he took fourth from starting eleventh, with Andrew Prather finishing fifth. Josh Cunningham started on the tail and raced to sixth. Jasonville’s Brandon Morin, who has shown a lot of growth this season, got over a competitor’s wheel and flipped, but was able to walk away without injury.

In the Green Earth Recycling and Composting RaceSaver main, New Whiteland’s Jeff Wimmenauer battled from a sixth row starting slot to capture his second Bloomington win of the season. He was followed by Luke Bland, John Paynter Jr., Terry Arthur and Patrick Kren. Kren and Arthur started on the front row and held their own over the 25 laps. Anton Hernandez took a tumble early in the main, but was uninjured.

It was Hehman’s sixth Racer Parts Wholesale feature race victory in ten Brandeis Machinery super stock division events this year, as he outran Steve Hollars, Zach Sasser, Steve Hawkins and Chip Slagle. Hollars and Hawkins hustled from third row starts to claim top five finishes.

A highlight of the evening was Bradley Sterrett’s strong run in the Heroes & Hornets 25-lap special event at the wheel of Chad Taylor’s #85 machine. The race featured drivers who had never driven a Hornet previously, such as Sterrett who’s background is primarily in modifieds and sprint cars, as well as a couple of drivers who had never raced at Bloomington before. Steve Hawkins finished second in the closely contested event, with Rodney Harris third, followed by Jake Scott and Josh Cunningham.

Next Friday, the ILMS Crate Late Models will be featured, with MMSA non-wing MiniSprints, the AJ Bowlen Real Estate ReMax Acclaimed Properties-sponsored modifieds, bombers and Bloomington’s Hornets. It will be the annual South Central Indiana Building Trades Night celebration on the hill.
