Brady Bacon – Second at Bloomington!

(Bill W) April 18, 2016 – Brady Bacon and the Hoffman Racing #69 team turned in a solid weekend of USAC racing in Indiana. Finally, Mother Nature was a race fan! The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma driver led laps three through eighteen at Bloomington Speedway on Friday before settling for second in that 30-lapper. He would surge from tenth to finish sixth at Tri-State Speedway near Haubstadt on Saturday. This Saturday night, USAC will make a rare appearance at Montpelier Motor Speedway in Montpelier, Indiana. It will mark Brady’s first trip to the ¼-mile oval.

Brady timed in fourth quick on Bloomington’s ¼-mile, before driving from sixth to second in his heat race. “It was pretty standard Bloomington as far as the track went,” he says. “There was a little strip to run around the bottom, and a groove on the top.”

Starting fourth in the feature, he would work his way to the front early on. “We were able to get to the lead about lap five or six of the feature,” says Brady. “We led until about ten to go. We were out there by ourselves, which is kind of a dangerous place to be sometimes.”

Dangerous, because the drivers behind you can search around the track comfortably. “(Bryan) Clauson just got going around the top all the way around and got by me,” says Brady. “That was kind of a hard one to lose for us. We were really good the whole race. We just picked the wrong part of the track at the end.”

On Saturday, Brady was tenth quick at Haubstadt. “We were the first car out, which is usually tough at that track,” he says. “It usually works in a groove during qualifying. Obviously, we didn’t hit that. I picked the wrong part of the track. I thought the groove would be the middle and it wound up being the top.”

After cruising to a second place finish in his heat, he would line up outside of row five for the main event. “We had a decent car,” says Brady. “It was just tough to pass and make up ground. When you are out by yourself, you can make some really good laps, but when you’re bottled up, it’s hard to pass. We just kind of picked our way up through there slowly.”

In the late going, Brady was setting a good pace in traffic, but settled for sixth. “There was a caution at the end that we really didn’t need,” he says. “We were a little better in traffic than some of the guys in front of us. I wish we could have had a couple more laps in traffic, but it was one of those nights that you just plug away, and then you go on to the next one.”
